About us:

Welcome to the official SNAP profile of Birmingham Hockey Club 1932.

Who Are We?

We are a family-friendly, neuro-inclusive Hockey Club, consisting of Open/Men's teams, a thriving Youth Academy and an ambition to run our own Ladies team in the near future. Based in Small Heath at the heart of East Birmingham, in an area with few sporting opportunities..

About Us

Founded on 18th May 1932, the then Birmingham Municipal Hockey Club was established by officials at Birmingham City Council for all those connected to the council. Playing on grass, around a council estate, the club grew quickly to field 4 Men's teams and a Ladies' team with an abundance of young players.

Since, the club has been on a journey rebranding (Yardley Hockey Club and recent City of Birmingham HC Men's and Juniors) following the removal of council backing and running. The club remains true to its roots, connecting the people of Birmingham through hockey and engaging with state schools to inspire a generation.

With recent accolades including award-winning Mentors, England Hockey recognition, Commonwealth Games involvement as a partner of the United by 2022 Legacy Charity and having our own Hometown Hero, with our club winning EuroHockey Small Club of the Year 2021 (under its former name), we are well positioned to deliver on the work we have done thus far.

We believe that sport is an opportunity to invest in the community, to develop and harness talent. We deliver that our impact over our 93 years demonstrates our drive to bring a social return on investment, for the good of the health and wellbeing of others.

Birmingham Hockey Club 1932

Today

Our club prides itself on good hockey, fair play. On and off the pitch our ideals reflect the core values of sport: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, Sportsmanship and Mutuality.

We have adopted England Hockey policies covering areas of our club working to include (but not limited to): Behaviour and Conduct, Safeguarding and Welfare, Mental Health, Inclusion, Financial responsibility, Concussion and First Aid, Data protection.

We have approximately 80 members across our Open/Men's, Juniors and Social members not counting their families and personal networks. Our Youth Academy is now developed on the fundamentals of a neuroinclusive approach, supporting a number of neurodiverse players to engage in hockey with their counterparts. Their individual needs, backgrounds and cognition are taken into consideration when developing a safe and adapted approach. Our club aims to make neuroinclusive approaches to hockey the norm, regardless of an individual's protected characteristics. from the age of four upto 80 years and older.

Supporting our club in a variety of ways will enable us to reinvest in the growth of the people and members at our club. Opportunities to develop our reach in state schools, of which only less than 4% of schools in Birmingham currently deliver hockey, can allow us to engage with, inspire and develop a love of hockey across a population not being afford this chance. Through developing our reach with schools, we can continue to develop our young people within the club to develop their employability skills through coaching placements and allowing them to make informed decisions pre-employment about careers with experience across different settings.

In addition to this, we will be able to further support our partners at local Holiday Activity and Food programmes to support a growing network of holiday and out-of-school providers to keep our youth engaged. This community presence will give families much-needed support, respite and opportunity for them and their children to explore more regular activities for them all. Our community work and investment from sponsors will enable us to sustain this work into our new ambition and 7-year plan. This will help us to support the development of our clubhouse and other wider opportunities linked to our club.

"Be the Change" - Our 7-year Plan

Mission - Creating and facilitating opportunities for ALL to Engage, Participate and Develop through a shared interest of Hockey

Vision - Bringing Hockey to All | Connecting the community with Hockey

Values - Connected, Valued, Empowered

We aspire to drive up the participation and engagement of hockey. We have identified that in order to do this, we must support increasing the visibility of hockey from school age. Across Birmingham, currently, less than 4% of state schools deliver hockey. The common barriers are: lack of skilled or trained staff and no bandwidth, lack of resources, concern around space, lack of community engagement and inspiration.

From engaging with schools, we hope to use existing networks and family hubs through education to broaden the offer of hockey to families. In doing so, our existing offer of neuroinclusive hockey, open adult sessions and family involvement can be maximised. We are proud of our work to date in developing our offer and trusted reputation in community delivery. Now is the time for us to deliver on this on a wider scale over the coming years. We want to put hockey on a level playing field to other competitive team sports, harnessing its unique ability to challenge an individual's dexterity, skill, social skills and competitive nature.

Beyond this, we have plans to expand our offer of social hockey to re-engage those referred by local GPs through social prescribing, network with mental health hubs, alongside whom we have previously worked and foster a culture of community through our wider stakeholder engagement to give opportunities to everyone to engage in a social environment through hockey. Plans include (but are not limited to) Midnight Hockey Leagues, Youth Hockey Schools Leagues and Weekly Social, Walking and Back-to-Hockey sessions.

We hope to use club assets, our digital platform and existing network growth to help potential sponsors in supporting our club, its ambitions and developing its social impact and social value in enabling growth opportunities through Birmingham Hockey Club 1932.
