Our Club

Our club has a long and proud history, having been founded way back in 1890. Over the years, Bentley Cricket Club has become a staple of the local sporting scene and a beloved institution among its players and supporters offering opportunities for players of all ages and skill levels to enjoy the game.

With over 130 years of tradition, Bentley Cricket Club has a rich heritage of promoting the sport of cricket and fostering a sense of community among its members. With a talented and dedicated group of players and coaches, the club has achieved a reputation for excellence both on and off the field. We are proud of our accomplishments and the positive impact we have had on the lives of our members and the wider community, but we are always striving to do more.

Our mission is to provide top-notch cricket facilities, programs, and opportunities for our members, and to promote the sport of cricket to the wider community. That's where you come in. We are seeking the support of local businesses and individuals to help us continue to grow and succeed. With your help, we can invest in new equipment and facilities, expand our programs, and attract even more players to Bentley Cricket Club.

The club has had one of the largest Dynamos Sections in Essex and our All Stars Programme continues to grow each year.

Based in the heart of Essex, Bentley Cricket Club has its own ground dedicated to cricket. The Cricket Boards of England and Wales, and Essex, (ECB/ECCB), have awarded us Clubmark and Focus Club Community status: confirming that we are a safe, effective, and child-friendly Club, and we will receive their special support in our continued efforts to develop cricket provision in the community.

We are renowned to have one of the best wickets and outfields in the area. The club house was completely rebuilt in 2000, with the help of a lottery grant and extensive fund raising by members. Improvements since then include a second pitch with changing facilities, mobile nets and electronic scoreboards for both pitches. A comfortable, well-stocked bar completes the picture.

Bentley Cricket Club has three adult Saturday sides and one adult Sunday side, as well as a plethora of Colt/Junior sides. Within the Colts section we accommodate children from 5 to 18.

The 1st XI adult Saturday side play league cricket in the Hamro Foundation Essex League (HFEL) and we also have two sides in the T.Rippon Mid-Essex League. We compete in 1st XI Division 3 of the HFEL and various divisions of the T.Rippon league so we offer different standards, from beginners to experienced competitive cricketers, enabling places for players of all abilities. The Sunday side compete in the National Village Cup competition and play a selection of friendly games. The Club prides itself on giving every player their fair share of involvement in each game.

The Colt section competes in the Central Essex District Cricket Board League and Cup competitions, as well as in the U12 Brian Taylor competition. We currently have an Under 15 team, an Under 13 team, an Under 12 team, an Under 11 team and an Under 9 team. On top of these, we also have an Under 7 section comprising of children aged 5, 6 or 7, which train on Friday evenings under a pay-as-you-go arrangement. Most Friday nights you’ll find over 120 kids plus their parents enjoying a beer and a burger at the best beer garden in Brentwood.

The Club also encourages junior female members and they play their league and cup cricket alongside the boys at all age levels.

Pavilion History

The old pavilion was bought for £120 in 1963 and was an ex-American prefab, used to house servicemen during World War II. This was erected during the winter of 1963/64 and was completed in time for the season of 1964 at the new ground in Coxtie Green Road. The work was done entirely by members of the Club, brought together and organised by the then Chairman, Bill Wood.

In the mid-1990s, after many great years of use, it was decided that it was probably time to replace the pavilion. Under the guidance of Club Chairman, Dave Smith, many different ways were investigated on how to raise the money needed to rebuild. Eventually, Malcolm Horswill came to the rescue and gained us a lottery grant from Sport England.

The demolition of the old pavilion started in October 1999 and the foundations for the new building were completed by the beginning of November. By Christmas, enough was completed to enable the Club to hold a New Year’s party in the new pavilion. Work continued throughout the next four months before the 2000 season, finishing the week before the first game.

Peter Flack laid the club room carpet on the day of the first game and it was furnished with new furniture paid for by donations given by members and friends of the Club.

The Pavilion was officially opened on 18th June 2000 by Keith Pont, ex-Essex C.C.C. and National Development Officer ECB.

Aspirations

With membership and crowd attendances rising, we have ambitious plans to continue to develop the infrastructure at the club and grow our teams. We have a 5 year plan to grow the club at every level.

Naturally, we want to support our sponsors and build them in to our club on a strategic level — allowing all of our partners to benefit from our ever-improving facilities, expanding audience and our community involvement.
