We are raising £400k for a Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) at Worplesdon Primary School Proposal to address critical outdoor space shortages caused by school expansion.
The Problem
The school has undergone four expansions over 15 years, growing from 4 classes (210 children) to 18 classrooms plus a special needs centre, now serving 540 mainstream children and 21 children with autism. These expansions have significantly reduced outdoor hard-standing space, with buildings placed on the playground.
Current Impact on Children
The limited space means:
- Staggered playtimes prevent cross-year group play
- Limited sporting equipment use due to safety concerns
- Difficulty providing the required 2 hours PE weekly
- Limited extra-curricular clubs
- Overwhelming environment for special needs children
- No mile-a-day running in wet months
The Solution
An all-weather MUGA on the school field would enable:
- Every child to receive at least 2 hours PE weekly
- Daily mile running year-round
- Increased sporting clubs
- Safe use of varied playground resources
- Cross-year group play opportunities
Support & Next Steps
Consultation in January-February 2024 showed overwhelming support: 98% of parents, 88% of children, and 100% of staff agree or strongly agree. Governors, the local MP, and councillors all support the project.
