Why Wimbledon Hockey club
About us:
WHO ARE WE?
ESTABLISHED IN 1883, WE ARE ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST ESTABLISHED & LEADING HOCKEY CLUBS.
Situated in the heart of South-West London, we field men’s sides, seven ladies’ sides and a success-ful, growing junior section.
The men’s 1st XI play in the Men’s England Hockey League Premier Division and the Ladies 1st XI play in the Women’s Hockey League Conference East. The Club currently has 11 internationals and 4 former GB players.
Wimbledon Hockey Club sits within the larger structure of The Wimbledon Club (TWC), which has close ties with the wider community as well as the All England Lawn Tennis Association.
WHY HOCKEY?
THERE IS LITTLE THAT INSPIRES AND EXCITES LIKE SPORT.
Hockey is the fastest growing participation sport in the world and is played by men and women of all ages and abilities.
In the UK, there are over 150,000 active players and 60 competitions, ranging from junior right through to masters leagues. Since the GB Women’s Team won Olympic Gold in Rio 2016, it has been amazing to see hockey gain mainstream media coverage and capture the imagination
of a vast new audience in addition to the strong collective of current and past players, supporters and volunteers that make up the hockey family.
THE WIMBLEDON CLUB SENIOR HOCKEY
The Ladies’ 1st XI have been placed in the top three in the National League East Conference with real aspirations to reach the Premier Division this season. The squad includes five international play-ers as well as Rio 2016 Olympic Gold medallist Crista Cullen.
The Men’s 1st XI is one of the most successful senior hockey teams over the past five years, having finished top of the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division for the last two seasons. The team have also qualified for the prestigious European Hockey League for three consecutive seasons in which they compete against the very best teams across Europe. There are currently six international
players in the squad, as well as four Olympians. Last year, the men’s indoor hockey team reached the final of the fast-paced, thrilling Jaffa Super Sixes, a popular televised indoor hockey event held at the Copper Box Arena in the Olympic Park every January. The Ladies’ indoor team also enjoyed suc-cess winning the South Regional Indoor tourna-ment.
The club has a further 290 senior members across nine men’s and seven ladies’ teams of all ages and abilities who play every Saturday throughout the season, as well as mixed leagues and London-based Summer League.
THE FUTURE
For the past decade, Wimbledon Hockey Club has supported our professional sports club aspirations by appointing a full-time Director of Hockey. The recent appointment of Simon Organ, an ex-GB international with top level coaching and director experience in Holland and Belgium, demonstrates the Wimbledon Hockey Club´s ambitions to be at the forefront of European hockey.
OUR SUPPORTERS
Wimbledon Hockey Club are famous across Europe for having the biggest and loudest supporters, fondly known as The Womble Army. Wombles can be found sporting club colours at every national and European hockey tournament supporting our senior and junior teams
