The South Wales Local Tours is about to enter its third year following on from the great successes of our first season where 16 players qualified for the European Championship 2022 and 6 players qualified for the World Championship.

The second season which concluded with the Tour Championship at Llanwern Golf Club on 16 October, will see more players qualifying for these events, especially as the tour grows in numbers as it has from Season 1 to Season 2.

Due to the success of the South Wales Local Tour, a new Local Tour will be launched this season, The South West England Local Tour, which will attract more players from England and also provide further opportunities for players to qualify for these big events.

The Organisation Today

U.S. Kids Golf Local Tours are created to provide boys and girls, ages 5 to 18, with the opportunity to advance their skills in the game in age-appropriate competition without having to take the time and incur the costs of having to travel long distances.

A Local Tour consists of between six and eight one-day tournaments including a season-ending one-day Local Tour Championship. Players earn awards and points for each tournament. 

All local tour events are hosted by different golf clubs through the season. 

U.S. Kids Golf hosts more tournaments than any other organisation in the world, with more than 1800 tournaments globally each year. Each event is noted for its attention to detail, welcoming culture, and emphasis on family enjoyment. From first-time participants to the most advanced young players in the world, U.S. Kids Golf is the ideal way to hone skills, measure improvement, and compete in a fun, friendly, and family-focused setting. Every player competes within their own age/gender and on scaled yardages based on the Longleaf Tee System.

The History of Our Tours

I started the Welsh Kids Golf Tour in 2018 as a progressive level from my Junior Academy. I moved to Wales in 2017 after coming home from South Africa in October 2016. I provided free lessons in schools as part of their Physical Education Curriculum and then offered free Holiday Camps. I recruited children into the LBG Junior Academy from these initiatives and soon went from zero children to 120 children in a short period of time.

Using the U.S. Kids Golf Player Pathway, I coached the children through the levels and then created the Welsh Kids Golf Tour to give the children the experience of tournament golf and it became an important progression for the Academy. U.S. Kids Golf then approached me to become part of their global Local Tours and the Welsh Kids Golf Tour became a U.S. Kids Golf Local Tour, the South West Local Tours.

We now have around 65 players and their families attend each event and that is increasing rapidly year-on-year. The golf clubs (as host venues) and the sponsors we’ve had for this season have gained incredible exposure through the local tour.

Next season the South Wales Local Tour will have more events in its season and the South West England Local Tour will be launched with 8 events and 1 Parent & Child Event.

Aspirations

I will continue to grow both of the Local Tours every season to reach as many junior golfers as possible. More players will qualify for the big events and bigger events will be created within the Local Tour areas. There’s already a 2-day tournament being planned for next season, based on the “Florida Cup”. The Bromley Mardon Cup will see players from the following Local Tours in the United Kingdom compete against each other in a 2-day event:

• South Wales Local Tour
• South West England Local Tour
• Northern Ireland Local Tour
• North London Local Tour
• South London Local Tour
• East Midlands Local Tour

Both local tours will continue to expand with an ambition to increase our numbers competing at the European and World Championships, with a view to gain exposure and hopefully produce a World Champion!
