We have a month of City Lunches coming up!

We are super excited for this Friday Alton RFC’s City Lunch, held at Smith and Wollensky, London!

Who are Alton RFC?

The club was founded in 1924/25 during a meeting which was held to form the Alton Rugby Football Club for Alton & District. Announcing they could play on local pitches, their first game (trial game) was against the Wireless School Flowerdown Camp. Flowerdown won by 27 points to 3 however the local paper said that the score line did not represent the game as Alton had much of the attack.

Alton RFC played many of their pre war matches at Whitedown Lane and used the local hotel (Market hotel) as their changing rooms. They would use them to change into their black jersey, white shorts and red/black stockings with a white embroidered badge. After the wars they decided to change club colours, therefore moving to the more recognisable red jersey, dark blue shorts and black stockings with white tops. The jerseys were obtained by Gloucester Regiment.

After the World Wars, it was a struggle to start but in 1948 the efforts of E.S Kench, G. Brook and Alan Stoodley enabled the re-construction of the club. It was soon decided shortly after that the club will reform and become Alton and Farnham as there was only one pitch in both areas.

By 1971, the club was running 3 senior sides and a colts team. Because of the clubs size, they applied for a clubhouse but the council decided they would only grant it if they renamed to Alton RFC. The did so and that clubhouse stands today.

Throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, the club started to make a name for itself due to it’s grit and determination. With it’s fighting spirit, the club gained it first silverware in 1985/86 season by winning the Hants Senior Merit Table. The highest league the club has been in is London 2 South division. After 18 years the club dropped out of the London league and they now find themselves being top of the Hampshire 1 2018/19 league. But it is close with not much separating the top teams.

What is the event?

On the 1st of March, Alton RFC have a social fund raising event with over 100 people booked in. With last years’ success, Alton booked it into their social calendar again. The money that is raised will go back into the 22 team club for the 2019/20 season.
